meeting in the middle
a past project

Meeting in the Middle addresses the San Luis Valley’s groundwater crisis by building regional food manufacturing capacity and increasing market demand for climate-smart grains. This project was a partnership between tumbleweed bread, an artisan bakery based in Monte Vista, and jones farms organics, a centennial farm based in hooper.

The project installed an on far Grab N Go bulk grain storage and sorting system for five varieties of rye, providing food-safe, small-batch access to value-added producers like Tumbleweed Bread. the project also procured a millet de-huller to unlock access to higher-value markets for SLV farmers, and providing food manufacturers with recipe ready access to this nutritious, climate smart grain.

A comprehensive storytelling campaign—through custom product labeling, retail displays, and online media educated consumers on the ecological and nutritional benefits of locally produced grains.

This $30,000 project, funded by the CDA Climate Smart Commodities Program, was designed and managed by SECANACo in 2025.
